The publisher plans further excerpts through November 23 ahead of the romantic fantasy adventure's December 1 release from Tor Books. The story follows En, a magically conditioned weapon
whose battle spells are carved into her skin. Sent to retrieve exiles from the dangerous Far Peninsula, she must work alongside Tamol, a soldier whose apparent cowardice masks unusual magical ability and a secret that threatens the mission. The novel also looks back to students whose attempt to change their kingdom
ended in banishment. Their possible survival draws renewed attention from the empire's archmagi.
